Review for Us And The Darkness EP

Here is a lovely review for my latest CD, Us And The Darkness!

“FIONA BEVAN - US AND THE DARKNESS

“To hear music that is so free of affectation, that exists in a world almost of its own, is an experience all too rare these days. But this is just what you get with Fiona Bevan’s latest release, Us and the Darkness - a record that positively shimmers with delight and wonder.

Part of Bevan’s unique appeal lies in her ability to create music that remains thoroughly modern sounding, yet manages to retain qualities that capture the magic of music created in halcyon times. The kaleidoscope of sounds contained within this record bring to mind a myriad of possible influences; early swing and jazz, bossa-nova, post-sixties psychedelic pop and much more besides.

Title track ‘Us and The Darkness’ sets the listener on a journey of cascading pianos, angelic vocals, and a simple string arrangement that provides a luscious backdrop for a paean to the rush of city living. ‘Feeding The Love Bird’ offers another chance to expose your senses to yet more of this singer’s vast and accomplished vocal range, this time to a backing track driven by a strong bass line and accompanying piano that sets a moody Noir-esque tone.

While the EP’s standout track ‘Dial D For Denial’ has already received global acclaim, recently making it to the semi-finals of the International Songwriting Competiton (check the list of judges for a who’s who of musical luminaries). ‘A Broken Heart Can Heal’ takes us back to the topsy-turvy jazz elements that featured prominently on her debut LP Plant Your Heart. Featuring a joyfully off-kilter rhythm section and gorgeous Satie-inspired piano melody, the songs serve as a strong reminder to those locked in unhappy relationships to get out while the going is good!

Consistently charming throughout, Us and the Darkness contains the sort of songs that will put a smile on the faces of fans of music from a multitude of timezones and genres.”
